As the new school year kicks off, it's the perfect time for teachers to embrace a fresh start with these back-to-school teacher tips.
Whether you're a seasoned educator or just starting out, taking a moment to wipe the slate clean mentally and intentionally choose what to keep, start, and stop in your classroom and personal life can set the tone for a successful year.
While you don't always have to wait for a natural beginning to make a fresh start, the beginning of the school year offers us a time to set the tone for the upcoming ten months with intentionality and purpose.
Here are some practical tips to help teachers start fresh:
Imagine setting everything you do as a teacher, friend, family member, or human being aside for a moment.
Visualize a clean, blank canvas—like a perfectly wiped whiteboard.
With the slate clean, you can begin adding back into your life what you want to continue.
Take stock of your responsibilities and relationships. Do you want to continue being a teacher? What about that school committee you’re heading? Or the after-school sports you’re coaching?
Everything you do in your life is a choice. Consciously choosing what to keep in your life, rather than feeling obligated, empowers you and helps prevent burnout.
A new school year can be an opportunity to start something new. Maybe you want to implement daily walks, begin a weekly class newsletter, or finally launch that after-school tutoring program you’ve been thinking about. Whatever it is, decide to start with intention.
Just as important as starting new habits is letting go of old ones that no longer serve you. Perhaps you want to stop mindlessly scrolling through social media or saying “yes” to every request from colleagues. Being intentional about what you drop can free up your energy for more meaningful pursuits.
Making changes can be uncomfortable, especially if it disappoints others. It’s natural to want approval, but remember: if someone is going to be unhappy with your life choices, it shouldn’t be you. Brooke Castillo wisely said, “If someone is going to be unhappy about your life, it shouldn’t be you.” Embrace the discomfort that comes with growth and stay committed to your fresh start.
A word of caution as you embark on these changes: don’t expect life in your classroom to suddenly become perfect. Life is always 50-50—half positive, half negative. Teaching [and life] is supposed to be this way.
As you prepare your classroom, sharpen pencils, and organize your space, remember to do everything with intention. Choose what you want to include in your life this year, and don’t be afraid to let go of what doesn’t serve you. A fresh start isn’t just about changing your environment; it’s about consciously deciding how you want to show up for yourself and your students.
By following these back-to-school teacher tips, you can create a fulfilling and intentional year ahead. Here’s to a fresh start and a successful school year!
