How to Recover from a Rough Start

As teachers, we often enter a new school year with high hopes and carefully laid plans, only to find that things don’t go as expected. Maybe you’ve recently moved to a new school, are adjusting to a different grade level, or are feeling the lingering effects of the pandemic. Whatever the reason, starting off on the wrong foot can be discouraging. But don't worry—here are some classroom management and mindset tips to help you recover and get back on track.

It's Okay

The first thing to remember is that it’s okay if your first few days, weeks, or even months didn’t go as planned. Don’t add to your frustration by beating yourself up about it.

Instead, approach the situation with compassion and understanding. Recognize that setbacks happen to everyone, and they don’t define your capabilities as a teacher.

Learn to Calm Your Nervous System

Remember Mrs. Bennet from Pride and Prejudice who was (annoyingly) always going on and on about "her nerves"? Well, it turns out she was on to something!

Sometimes when everything is seemingly going wrong, our nervous system can send us into a stress-activated state. Since this is a physiological condition, we cannot solve it with cognitive thinking. We must first address our nervous system and return it to a state of calm and safety.

If you find yourself feeling stressed or overwhelmed, take a moment to breathe deeply and remind yourself that you’re safe. By calming your nervous system, you can think more clearly and approach challenges with a problem-solving mindset.

Own What's True

With a calm nervous system, you can evaluate what worked and what didn't work--without shaming yourself! Self-judgment will not be helpful in moving forward. You are simply determining what was not useful so that you can make the necessary adjustments.

Ask yourself: What were you thinking and feeling? What actions did those thoughts and feelings lead to? Once you’ve identified the root causes, you can start to shift your mindset. For example, if you’re struggling with classroom management, instead of thinking, “I don’t know how to manage this class,” try shifting to, “I’m figuring out how to manage this class.” This subtle change can create a sense of hope and empowerment which will lead you to solutions.

One of the biggest obstacles to effective classroom management is falling into the “I don’t know” trap. It’s easy to say, “I don’t know what to do,” but this mindset can lead to inaction and confusion. Instead, challenge yourself to take action, even if it’s imperfect. Remember, progress often involves trial and error, and each step forward brings you closer to finding what works.

Focus on What You Can Control

In any classroom situation, it’s important to focus on what you can control. You can’t control your students’ behavior, but you can control how you respond to it. Set clear expectations, communicate rules, and consistently enforce consequences. Seek support from colleagues, parents, and administrators when needed, but also offer yourself grace as you navigate challenges.

You have the power to take action, and with each new day, you have the opportunity to reset and start fresh.

Don’t let a rough start define your school year. Instead, use these classroom management tips to regain control, stay resilient, and create a positive learning environment for your students.

Remember, every day is a new beginning, and you have the ability to create the future you want for yourself and your classroom.
