Teacher Self-Care Ideas that Actually Work

(No...it's not more bubble baths!)

When teachers are feeling stressed and exhausted, the advice we often hear is: “Make sure you’re practicing self-care.”

So we search for teacher self care ideas—and usually end up with lists of bubble baths, yoga classes, or grabbing a latte with a friend.

And while those things are wonderful, they don’t touch the deeper stress teachers carry every single day.

  • The science-backed self-care ideas teachers actually need.
  • How to implement these self-care ideas step-by-step (without putting more on your plate!).

Why Traditional Teacher Self-Care Ideas Fall Short

You can’t wash away the pressure of lesson planning, behavior management, or testing requirements with a bubble bath. You can’t yoga your way out of back-to-back emails from parents or late nights grading.

This doesn’t mean those activities are bad. It means they’re not designed to address the root causes of teacher burnout.

The Missing Piece: Emotional Regulation

The truth is, the best teacher self-care ideas aren’t surface-level at all—they go much deeper to the cause of the problem. The best teacher self-care is rooted in emotional regulation and nervous system awareness.

Most teacher preparation programs never gave us these tools. We were trained in pedagogy, content knowledge, and child development, but not in how to handle the emotional demands of teaching.

That’s why so many teachers end up burned out despite practicing self-care—they’re missing the foundational skills required for longevity in the classroom, which is NOT their fault, by the way!

Teacher, it's not YOU.
It's your BRAIN!

You’re staring at a mountain of ungraded papers, "that" parent just emailed again, and your lunch is still sitting untouched.

You wonder, “Why can’t I handle this better? What’s wrong with me?”

The truth?

Nothing.

Your brain is doing exactly what it’s wired to do—protect you by scanning for danger, anticipating problems, and staying on high alert. In other words, it’s trying to help... but it’s efforts often work against you becoming the calm, confident teacher you want to be.

That’s where I come in. I help teachers understand their brain’s survival patterns—and train them to work with those patterns instead of fighting them.
